 Addressing the leaking issueJan 23, 2006

I noticed that some people had leaking problems with this shaker, so I decided to go look at the product locally. Here's what I found:
Because the shaker comes in an unsealed plastic case, you can take each shaker out and examine it. Some units have a top cap that fits nice and snugly onto the lid. Others have a very loose fit, with the top cap easily sliding on and off with almost no effort. I suspect these are the ones that may end up with leaking problems.
My advice is to consider a local purchase so you can make sure you get a snug fitting unit. When you get one that works, it's an outstanding shaker. Great ergonomics, no leaking, and it never gets stuck together or otherwise does annoying things. I'm quite happy with mine.

Ever since acquiring my favorite piece of furniture (a bar cabinet), I've been delving into the mysteries of mixology bit by bit. It's one of those things that I was initially drawn to in college, due to a fascination for the intricate alchemy that is the mixture of strange liquids in all sorts of colors, but I was too poor then to be able to afford the necessary ingredients and hadn't yet developed a palate for more unusual tastes. Once we decided not to become house-poor by buying a new place but instead concentrated on making the place we had more livable, I began stocking up on different liquors, having already begun a love affair with the gin martini (dry as can be) two years ago.
In that time, I've had three cocktail shakers, and tried several others, and I've finally found the one that, to me, is perfection: the OXO 16-oz Cocktail Shaker. Yes, I know that real mixologists swear by the Boston-type shaker, which is basically a stainless steel container which you can fit a glass of similar proportions into, and I haven't really given that one a fair shake. But the OXO has some things that make it more appealing. It is easier to pour from without making a mess. The double wall construction of the main portion make it possible to hold onto it while shaking without freezer burning your hand. And, best of all, it's dishwasher safe! It's large enough to handle making two drinks at once and it doesn't leak, unlike the last large stainless steel shaker I had.
My mother-in-law was the first to introduce me to the OXO line, as we continue to get new additions to our OXO collection every Christmas. Everything we've got by them is well-designed and great to use (including the other bar accessory, the citrus strainer). I shouldn't have been surprised that their shaker is great.

This shaker is awesome! It is well made and fits together with precision. The double insulated bottom portion of the shaker keeps what's inside extremely cold without freezing your hand as you shake your drinks. The spout cover doubles as a measuring tool with various amounts clearly marked. The strainer allows the liquid to flow out while keeping the ice in the shaker. Some shakers are hard to pour from since the strainer easily clogs with ice. Not so here. Overall, it's the best I have used.

My number one quality in a shaker is that it doesn't leak. The OXO leaks and I am dissappointed in a brand that usually makes such good products. I used it once and returned it.

 Great looking but not functional!Mar 10, 2005

I was first drawn to this shaker for 2 reasons. 1) it looked sexy as hell and 2) OXO normally makes great kitchen tools. When I finally got it, I was VERY disappointed. The shaker leaked whenever I shook it no matter how tightly I held the cap on.
I LOVE the way it looks and wish it was better constructed but ended up returning it because it just wasn't functional.
